Hilltop Lookout to the Giant Tingle Tree – One of my favourite short hikes.

Experience one of Walpole–Nornalup National Park’s most beautiful short hikes, following the iconic Bibbulmun Track through many towering red tingle and karri forest. This trail begins at Hilltop Lookout and follows the Bibbulmun Track, marked by the well-known waugal trail markers. The path winds through ancient forest rich in wildlife, birdsong, and impressive tingle trunks. It is a genuine hiking trail, and natural obstacles may be present, but the track is generally clear and easy to walk.

Distance:

A Taste of the Bibbulmun Track

The Bibbulmun Track winds for 1,000 km through Noongar Country, offering hikers a deep immersion into Western Australia’s forests, coastlines, and landscapes. On this short section, you’ll feel the spirit of the Track — its quietness, simplicity, and sense of journey — without needing to carry a big pack or walk long distances.

Hikefulness on the Trail

This experience invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and notice:

  • The grounding presence of red tingle giants, centuries old and found nowhere else on Earth
  • The tall karri and marri trees rising softly above the understory
  • The scent of peppermint and sheoak as the breeze moves through the forest
  • Textures, sounds, and colours that shift with every step

We take mindful pauses along the way — moments of stillness to connect with the forest, listen to the birds, and settle into nature’s pace.

Getting to the Hilltop Lookout

The hike begins at the Hilltop Lookout, a quiet destination in Western Australia’s Southern Forests, you will drive slowly on a gravel road, which is fine for 2wd vehicles. Getting there is simple, and there’s parking available.

From Denmark:
  • Drive south on South Coast Highway (Highway 1) for approximately 61 km.
  • Turn right onto Hilltop Rd, look for the sign and follow the gravel road approximately 2 km to the Hilltop Lookout on your right.
From Walpole:
    • Drive north on South Coast Highway for about 2.5 km, then turn left onto Hilltop Rd and follow the gravel road approximately 2 km to the Hilltop Lookout.

Hikefulness is a natural feeling you receive after hiking for a while, that encourages the mental, physical and emotional connection to everything around you. The flora, wildlife, other hikers and yourself.

Hikefulness brings you to the present and to take responsibility organically that both be challenging and bring you peace at the same time.

The LifeTrail Hikefulness experience always empowers participants to build independence and resilience. Hikes are a mentored hiking experience rather than a tour.

There is a focus placed on self physical, mental and emotional awareness. A right balance of education, community, silence,  guidance and space when needed.

Knowing when to move forward and when to rest and reflect, is essential to managing stress and becoming more prductive during daily activities like school or work.
