A real trail. A real adventure. Just for kids.

A kids-only guided hiking adventure for ages 10–13, walking a genuine section of the Bibbulmun Track through ancient karri and tingle forest near Walpole.

Parents drop off at Conspicuous Cliffs and have until pick-up at the Tree Top Walk to explore, eat, and breathe — your child steps into one of the great trails of Australia and comes back having genuinely earned something.

Small group. Maximum thirteen children. Two experienced adult guides on every hike.

The Bibbulmun Track is Western Australia’s 1000 km hiking trail, considered a world-class long-distance walking trail. People from all around the world come to hike it end-to-end.

For many children from Perth, the idea that the same track they may have seen near Kalamunda, Mundaring or Dwellingup also travels all the way down through the southern forests near Walpole can be extraordinary.

This genuine hiking experience gives young people a chance to understand that the track is not just a local walk. It is a long journey through Western Australia — and they are stepping onto a real part of it.

Breaks happen when they’re needed, not on a schedule. This is hiking the way it’s meant to be done.

This is not a family hike. Parents and guardians drop children off and collect them afterwards. Families wanting to hike together can book a Private Guided Day Hike.

What Makes This Different

Led by Didier Monot, founder of LifeTrail, this hike draws on more than 20 years of experience in youth work, school camps, out-of-school care, mentoring, Duke of Edinburgh–style programs and guided Bibbulmun Track adventures. Didier holds a Certificate IV in Residential and Community Care with Children.

Didier has hiked more than 3,000 km, including a solo end-to-end of the Bibbulmun Track in 2016, and loves sharing stories from the trail. He has also mentored hikers preparing to complete the full 1,000 km track solo. Every departure is led by Didier and an experienced female assistant guide.

This section of track is personally maintained by Didier, including a genuine Bibbulmun Track campsite that most visitors never reach. Children have the opportunity to learn how to read the trail and take turns leading the group themselves — real navigation, real responsibility, real adventure.

Who Is This Hike For?

This hike suits your child if:

  • They’re comfortable walking for several hours on uneven bush trails
  • They’re ready for a genuine outdoor challenge without parental support
  • They want something more substantial than a short nature walk
  • They’re drawn to adventure, independence, and the natural world
  • They’re aged 10–13 and ready to hike with a small group of peers

Children who require one-to-one support are not suited to this public group format. If you’re unsure whether your child is ready, get in touch before booking — a quick conversation is always welcome.

Didier welcomes calls from parents and young hikers—there are no silly questions.

Preparing for Your Adventure

This is a kids-only school holiday hike. A parent or guardian must complete the booking and provide emergency contact details, medical information, and any relevant information that may help Didier safely support your child.

Children need to arrive 15 minutes before the start time, ready to walk WA’s magnificent Bibbulmun Track.

South Coast weather: This hike goes ahead in rain and cold. It may be changed, postponed or cancelled if weather or track conditions are unsafe.

Parents and guardians are responsible for making sure their child is physically and emotionally ready for a small-group hiking experience without them present.

Didier carries emergency communication equipment and has extensive experience managing small groups on the Bibbulmun Track.

What to Bring

They will need:

  • comfortable walking shoes or trail shoes (they may get very wet and dirty)
  • a hiking day pack
  • clothes for hiking (preferably quick-drying synthetic clothing, not cotton)
  • water (minimum 2 litres)
  • a cold lunch and snacks to maintain energy levels
  • rain jacket
  • warm layer
  • sun protection if needed
  • a small roll of toilet paper
  • any required personal medication
  • a rubbish bag for all rubbish

What Others Say

“Aquinas Junior School Ignite students have thoroughly appreciated the opportunities provided for both day and overnight hikes through Didier Walks. The hikes provide a true sense of adventure, great camaraderie, and plant the seed for further exploration to get our kids in touch with nature, which is great for the mind, body and general wellness. We are grateful for the expertise and enthusiasm that Didier offers our students.”

— Ron Fris — Ignite Leader / Teacher – Aquinas College, Perth

What Young Hikers Will Experience

This is a real Bibbulmun Track hiking experience, designed for younger hikers.

The hike will begin from the Conspicuous Cliff carpark. From there, Didier helps maintain this section of the Bibbulmun Track, including a genuine track campsite that most visitors to the Valley of the Giants never reach.

Along the way, young hikers may learn about:

  • the Bibbulmun Track and where it goes
  • the Waugal trail markers
  • how long-distance hikers use the track
  • how to move safely through real wilderness
  • flora
  • wildlife
  • walking as a group
  • leading a group
  • looking after the track
  • forest awareness
  • route awareness and what to do if they feel lost
  • what it means to be prepared outdoors
  • meeting and learning from other hikers
  • how to plan a hike

This is not a classroom lesson. Learning happens through LifeTrail’s Hikefulness® approach: walking, noticing, asking questions and being trusted with a genuine trail experience.

By the end of the hike, children should be able to say:

“I hiked part of the Bibbulmun Track.”

And that matters.

FAQ - Questions I am frequently asked

Didier is a WA Tourism Council–licensed operator with over more than 20 years across support-related roles. He has personally hiked 3,000km including a solo 68-day end-to-end hike of the Bibbulmun Track. Didier's hikes have a strict 1:6 ratio and carries a PLB Personal Location Beacon and Satellite Phone on every hike. A safety communication network is maintained with a trusted contact at home throughout every expedition. Didier has a current remote First Aid and is a volunteer member of the Denmark (SES) State Emergency Service.

This hike suits children aged 10–13 who can comfortably walk for several hours on uneven bush trails while carrying a light day pack.

They should also be ready to follow instructions, remain with a small group and spend the day outdoors without a parent or guardian present.

Your child does not need to be an experienced hiker, but this is a genuine 15 km Bibbulmun Track hike rather than a short recreational walk.

If you are uncertain about their physical or emotional readiness, please contact Didier before booking.

A short conversation can help determine whether this is the right experience for them.

Didier has frequently guided beginner school groups of this age over similar distances.

No. Mobile phones are not permitted on this hike.
A phone-free day helps young hikers stay present, notice their surroundings, talk with the other children and take part fully in the group experience. It also reduces distractions, comparison, filming and social-media pressure, allowing the group to build trust and enjoy the trail together.
Parents should contact Didier directly if they need to pass on an urgent message during the hike.

Yes, the hike can proceed in normal South Coast rain and cold weather. Experiencing changing weather is part of a genuine outdoor adventure, provided the group is correctly equipped.

Didier monitors the forecast and track conditions via government websites and direction. The hike may be changed, postponed or cancelled if conditions create an unacceptable safety risk of if the trail section is suddenly closed.

Didier guides at a pace suitable for the group, with breaks for food, water and rest.

Didier will monitor how each child is managing physically and emotionally throughout the day.

Please note that because this hike takes place in a remote area, a young hiker cannot leave the group early or be collected partway through the route.

Didier has guided more than 1,000 beginner teenage hikers on multiday hiking expeditions.
