Young Hikers: Bibbulmun Track Adventure — Valley of the Giants

A real trail. A real adventure. Just for kids.

A kids-only guided hiking adventure for ages 10–13, walking a genuine section of the Bibbulmun Track through ancient karri and tingle forest near Walpole.

Parents drop off at Conspicuous Cliffs and have until pick-up at the Tree Top Walk to explore, eat, and breathe — your child steps into one of the great trails of Australia and comes back having genuinely earned something.

Small group. Maximum ten children. Two experienced adult Guides on every hike.

The Bibbulmun Track is Western Australia’s 1000 km hiking trail, considered a world-class long-distance walking trails. People from all around the world come to hike it end-to-end.

For many children from Perth, the idea that the same track they may have seen near Kalamunda, Mundaring or Dwellingup also travels all the way down through the southern forests near Walpole can be extraordinary.

This is a genuine hike with that gives young people a chance to understand that the track is not just a local walk. It is a long journey through Western Australia — and they are stepping onto a real part of it.

Breaks happen when they’re needed, not on a schedule. This is hiking the way it’s meant to be done.

This is not a family hike. Parents and guardians drop children off and collect them afterwards. Families wanting to hike together can book a Private Guided Day Hike.

What Makes This Different

Led by Didier Monot, founder of LifeTrail — with over 20 years of experience in youth work, school camps, out-of-school care, Duke of Ed–style programs, and guided Bibbulmun Track adventures, a Certificate III in Residential and Community care with Children.

Didier who has 3000 km hiking experience. He completed a solo end-to-end of the Bibbulmun Track in 2016 and loves sharing his stories. He has mentored individuals to complete the entire 1000 km solo. he is supported by an experienced female assistant on every hike.

This section of track is personally maintained by Didier, including a genuine Bibbulmun Track campsite that most visitors never reach. Children have the opportunity to learn how to read the trail and take turns leading the group themselves — real navigation, real responsibility, real adventure.

Who Is This Hike For?

This hike suits your child if:

  • They’re comfortable walking for several hours on uneven bush trails
  • They’re ready for a genuine outdoor challenge without parental support
  • They want something more substantial than a short nature walk
  • They’re drawn to adventure, independence, and the natural world
  • They’re aged 10–13 and ready to hike with a small group of peers

Children who require one-to-one support are not suited to this public group format. If you’re unsure whether your child is ready, get in touch before booking — a quick conversation is always welcome.

Didier welcomes phone calls from hikers and parents, there are no silly questions.

Preparing For Your Adventure

Children need to arrive 15 minutes before the start time, ready to walk WA’s magnificent Bibbulmun Track.

South Coast Weather: This hike goes ahead in rain and cold. It may be changed, postponed or cancelled if weather or track conditions are unsafe.

Parents and guardians are responsible for making sure their child is physically and emotionally ready for a small-group hiking experience without them present.

What Others Say

“Aquinas Junior School Ignite students have thoroughly appreciated the opportunities provided for both day and overnight hikes through Didier Walks. The hikes provide a true sense of adventure, great camaraderie, and plant the seed for further exploration to get our kids in touch with nature, which is great for the mind, body and general wellness. We are grateful for the expertise and enthusiasm that Didier offers our students.”

What Young Hikers Will Experience

This is a real Bibbulmun Track hiking experience, designed for younger hikers.

The hike will begin from the Valley of the Giants area near Walpole. From there, Didier will guide the group onto a nearby section of the Bibbulmun Track, including part of the trail he helps maintain.

Along the way, young hikers may learn about:

  • the Bibbulmun Track and where it goes
  • the Waugal trail markers
  • how long-distance hikers use the track
  • how to move safely through real wilderness
  • flora
  • wildlife
  • walking as a group
  • leading a group
  • looking after the track
  • forest awareness
  • route awareness, how to deal feeling lost
  • what it means to be prepared outdoors
  • meet and learn from other hikers
  • how to plan your own hike

This is not a lesson and not a school classroom. The learning happens through LifeTrail’s Hikefulness, walking, noticing, asking questions, and being trusted with a real trail experience.

By the end of the hike, children should be able to say:

“I hiked part of the Bibbulmun Track.”

And that matters.

“Twenty years of people trusting me with their kids, their wellbeing, their hard days and their big moments — I don’t take that lightly. This work is a privilege. I get to hike the landscapes I love in one of the most extraordinary regions in the country — and share every step of it with you.”
